November Print Give-Away (part 1)
November 4, 2010
As Christmas draws near and my excitement level rises, I decided to try something new. So, for you, my loyal blog followers, I’m going to have a print give-away this month. 10 prints, at random on the blog (starting today) will be given away between now and the 30th.
I wanted to not only get some prints out there and do something fun for christmas and my viewers, but also to celebrate and share with you a new partnership that I’ve recently started with John Hosmer of Hosmer Studio and Gallery. John has an artwork reproduction company specializing in high end printing and I approached him a few months ago about getting into the photography business with fine art printing. Thus began our partnership and now John is printing all of my photographs on fine art paper, hand inspecting each one as they’re shipped and, in general, helping make me look good ;) I LOVE partnering with people who are passionate about what they do and can really work with me well, and I’m so excited to add John to the list of those who are a part of Stephen DeVries Photography family.
So as I said, to celebrate that and christmas (and you all!) Here are the details of the give-away:
I will give away 10 8″x10″ fine art prints on the blog throughout the month. To qualify for one all you have to do is respond to a question posted that day with the print, and you’re in the running. The winner will be selected 1 of 2 ways: Either I will pick the most compelling/intriguing answer (the one that grabs me the most) OR, if nothing jumps out at me, a winner will randomly be generated from the commenters.
Here’s the catch…if you know me at all you know that I am a teeny tiny bit of a Star Wars Fan…(if you don’t know me that was sarcasm…I’ll take on any one of you in Star Wars trivial pursuit and whoop you)
So in order to combine two of my favorite things in the world (photography and Star Wars), the questions are all going to be Star Wars themed. Get creative, make it interesting and enjoy the free prints!
Print 1:
Port-au-Prince – This photo was shot from the window of our airplane as we arrived in Port-au-Prince just after Hurricane Ike trashed the country. It has become one of my favorite travel photos that I’ve ever taken so I thought that I’d start the give-away with it.
Question 1: We’ll go ahead and start with an obvious one…Han Solo or Luke Skywalker…who’s cooler and why?

Dude. I am watching the Star Wars movies for the FIRST TIME ever and have one left to go. Can we still be friends even though I waited this long to watch them? And am kind of a Trekie? Haha!
Han Solo or Luke Skywalker. Um.. I don’t feel like I am well acquainted enough to make a judgement. Maybe I have to watch the movies a few dozen more times. Sooooo.. I’m going with Solo. Just because Luke is kind of annoying.
But regarding the print? Beautiful. My in-laws have spiritually adopted a young Haitian man into our family (he’s been living here with them for two years now) and visit Haiti often on mission trips. My MIL is a midwife and medical director of a clinic her church built down there. This would be a pretty cool print to give to them for their walls. :)

Okay Stephen. First, off, bring on the Trivia! Any film remotely related to Star Wars and Superheroes – I’m game! Secondly, I would like to participate in your contest. Here is my attempt at answering your rather profound question:
Who’s cooler? Han or Luke? In a way this is a bit difficult, because both characters are totally awesome in my book, but on the coolness factor and only the coolness factor – I go with Han Solo. At first glance, the ‘Scruffy-Looking Nerf Herder’ catches anyone’s attention. He’s got the look, the attitude, the Millennium Falcon, Chewie as the companion and friend, the amazing technologically advanced John Wayne blaster, and the killer 80′s retro space boots! And who’s to say he doesn’t have ‘special’ abilities like the Jedi…didn’t you notice in the first film when confronted by Greedo that he slightly tilted his head to avoid Greedo’s blast. Nuff said there. Han has the tough guy-gentle hearted-bad boy persona that even a princess can fall for; oh wait, I think one did.
On the coolness factor: Luke didn’t even register true skill until halfway through the second film and a good portion of the third – takes after his father! BURN! Also, like his father they both shared the Whiny Farm Boy, Boo-Hoo, Me this, Me That routine – BURN AGAIN!
Stephen, is your blog comments large enough to handle any more of my reasons….hopefully this will suffice for now.

star wars is quite possibly one of the most progressive and inspiring movies of all time for its won time. there is the classic good vs evil scenario while also tying in fundamentals of original science fiction and envelope pushing special effects cinematography. there are two apparent protagonists in the original trifecta: han solo and luke skywalker. while han solo is the rebellious (get it? its punny. bc hes the leader of the rebellion…) loose cannon of the two. believing in only what he can see and accomplish himself via his laser gun and the very reputable millennium falcon. then theres luke. the one whose life was practically predetermined to be the one to bring balance to the force (but we didnt really know that until the pre-quels came out). so i could pull the jesus card and say how luke inspired solo to believe in things unseen and what not but i shall take a different route. i could also go with the “the whole story is about luke” route but… no. the question at hand is who is cooler. luke could easily beat the snot out of han but that’s not what this is about. while luke was pretty cool with his whole jedi thing and all, but lets face it: being a jedi is like being a catholic priest. wise and celibate. now dont get me wrong, ive met some cool priests in my day but when compared to an outlaw smuggler who has the fasted whip in the galaxy, the choice is obvious. AND solo gets the girl. the force can do a lot of things for you, but not woo the ladies. so solo, youre the cooler one in my book (even though i am a luke fan through and through).

Ok Stephen, I love your Blog always, so that’s a check. I have been to Haiti (pre earthquake) so I share a love for the country like you do, so that’s a check! not to mention that picture is simply amazing! I also know you love Star Wars and while I have seen them many times, I am not the biggest nerd about them like you are. So my simple answer is that I would go with Han Solo any day, he seems like way more of a man to me in any given situation! Now that we are done with the Star Wars question, you really should throw out some Harry Potter trivia because I also know the love for Harry Potter that we both share! Check!

No question on this one: Han Solo, all day.
I’ve heard the original Star Wars trilogy labeled as “space opera,” which I can get behind. Along with Alien and Close Encounters, Episode 1 pulled 70s space sci-fi out of the gutter and elevated it to high art. Great characters, classical themes, and cutting-edge effects cemented it as a modern classic, with Han Solo as its enviable loner bad-A.
He was the Achilles character in the Star Wars epic saga, the Mad Max. He did what he wanted, he owned his own ship, and he shot first. The story may have been about Luke, but Han was the character you wanted to BE.

I’m hoping that instead of being shunned you will take pity on me and give me advice (and a beautiful print!). I’m in my 20′s and I’ve never seen Star Wars. I don’t know how I managed to get through life without seeing them but I did it. A couple years ago when I realized this I started asking friends about them and I could never get a straight answer on the sequence to watch them in so I just gave up due to it being too overwhelming. If you can set me straight on the order to watch them in I can promise that I will make complete use of my current unlimited rentals card at the video store.
