My last day in Greece (was Tuesday*)
October 15, 2010
I’m back in the states in my own bed while the rest of the team is finishing up their time in Greece. It’s weird to think that they’re still there doing the outreaches on the streets and living at the Mercy Center without me. There’s a part of me that really wishes I was still there, but also a part that’s so grateful to be home in my bed and hanging out with Jessi (who I really don’t get to see enough these days).
Here are a few shots from my last day at the center, tuesday night. We had an outreach to the Afghani refugee community which included a kids program, a service for the adults and a feeding program. It was unbelievable how many people showed up and piled up outside to get in before the program. After the feeding program we went out to the plaza once again and brought back several people from the streets for a service to the Greek community.
I can only best describe this trip as intense. It blew my mind to experience some of the things that are happening right in the center of Greece that I had never heard of before (you typically think of the islands and the acropolis when you think of Greece, not rampant heroin use and prostitution). It was eye opening to say the least. I’ll blog the final project when I get it done in a few weeks.
On a slightly different note, Jessi and I are catching the train this afternoon up to New Haven, CT this afternoon for our Yale wedding this weekend…I’m so pumped about it (0ur most ‘northern’ wedding yet!). Pictures from the fall in the northeast coming soon!
